Café Morgal is situated in the Governor's Palace on Moravian Square in Brno. Originally an Augustinian monastery, this building's history reaches as far as the Middle Ages. The present café is located in the original sacristy of the church of St. Thomas. The new interior was inspired by fragments of the original baroque frescoes uncovered during the reconstruction.
The working concept of "New Baroque" was realized with the help of the artist Vendula Chalánková who delivered fifteen original paintings on chairs, citing not only the colours and ornaments of the fresco but also its state after 40 years of communistic historic "preservation". We reinstated the original orientation of the space towards the altar, now replaced by the bar. The custom-made solid ash furniture is combined with new wall paintings in the colours of the fresco. The ceiling lights hang on an independent construction and have the shape of an unfolded pearl, illustrating the original meaning of the word barroco.
